Snoring Appliances
What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by interruptions in your breathing while you sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by obstructions in the airway that block your airflow. Untreated sleep apnea has been linked to several serious health problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, stroke, and heart failure, and it can even be life threatening. Men are more likely than women to suffer from sleep apnea, and you may also be at increased risk if you are over the age of 40, overweight, or have a large neck size.
What are the signs of sleep apnea?
You may suffer from sleep apnea if you notice the following signs and symptoms:
- Difficulty staying asleep
- Excessive daytime drowsiness
- Awakening with a headache
- Loud, chronic snoring
- Gasping or choking spells during sleep
- Irritability and personality changes
- Difficulty concentrating
- Awakening with a very dry or sore throat
If you notice these symptoms in yourself or a loved one, we recommend visiting a medical professional. Dr. Scott Lindsay, our dentist, is trained to provide sleep apnea appliances, which can be used to effectively treat mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea in Centennial, Colorado.
What is a sleep apnea appliance?
A sleep apnea appliance is an oral appliance that you wear in your mouth as you sleep. The appliance prevents blockages in your airway while you sleep, allowing you to breathe continuously though the night. By treating sleep apnea, the appliance helps to improve your overall health and allows you to get a better night’s rest.
